In this session, you'll discover how to use a free online resource called Flippity which provides Google Sheets templates and examples for creating 28 different online activities. We will be discussing how these free templates can be used to design the following: random name pickers, virtual breakout rooms, manipulatives, matching games, quiz games, Snowman (Hangman), Connecto, and board games for content-area classrooms. Ready for Day One: Strategies to Engage Newcomer Multilingual Learners
Teaching Newcomer Multilingual Learners (MLs) is a daunting and increasingly common task in our schools. Just as we focus on what students CAN DO, we should focus on what teachers CAN DO to support these students as well. Newcomers come from a broad range of academic backgrounds, parts of the world, and with varying socioemotional needs and, unfortunately, there is no silver bullet for success. This session focuses on what schools and teachers can do to engage and assist their newcomer students until they are able to function in the classroom with less accommodations. Topics include assessing newcomers’ backgrounds, the WIDA standards, comprehensible input strategies, and graphic organizers. Participants will place all these strategies in a lovely foldable during the session.
