Dynamic Dual Language Practices for the Elementary Classroom

Let’s learn together to teach Spanish in a fun and effective way! It is time to reflect, review and revitalize our pedagogy! Poetry, art, and literature will serve as a context as we take an in-depth look at standards-based teaching with an emphasis on those standards specific to Spanish. We will review strategies for teaching the basic skills and present a sequence for teaching grammar skills as they build upon each grade level. We will focus on the use of literature to promote oral and written production through the coherent integration of the four language domains. Lessons and strategies that facilitate explicit cross-linguistic transfer instruction between Spanish and English will be modeled and practiced.



This institute will be taught in Spanish and includes practical activities and lesson demonstrations. As a result of attending this institute participants will:

  • Use poetry, art, and literature as a context for standards-based instruction in Spanish.
  • Understand organization and linguistic augmentation for Spanish of the Common Core
  • Understand the differences in early literacy methodologies between Spanish and English.
  • Review basic Spanish foundational skills routines and strategies.
  • Strategies for explicit Cross-Linguistic Transfer Instruction
  • Strategies to promote oral and written production
