Two different schools were chosen- Saline High School and Multicultural Academy. The Treetops Collective program serves immigrant and refugee high school girls who have been in the country for less than five years. The goal was to create a supportive and uplifting space to foster a feeling of sense of belonging for newcomer students. The program also strives to create a space for teens to express themselves, connect with peers, and develop social skills. In this presentation, participants will gain understanding about the Treetops Collective program, the curriculum the program follows, and will also be taken on a journey about the successes and limitations of the new pilot- including learning strategies to make the content accessible and engaging for newcomer high school students.

Linking the ELD Framework to Literacy Essentials
With an increase of students who are English Language Learners in Michigan schools, teachers are looking for ways to develop language in their classrooms more than ever. There are existing frameworks - specifically, the ELD framework and Literacy Essentials - that highlight best instructional practices that yield high results in both student motivation and academic achievement. This presentation will take a close look at both of these frameworks to see where they intersect, allowing teachers to develop intentional literacy instruction for all elementary students, but specifically English language learners at any level of English proficiency.

In this session, you'll discover how to use a free online resource called Flippity which provides Google Sheets templates and examples for easily creating 28 online activities. We will discuss how these free templates can save time and energy when creating your favorite hands-on activities for newcomers like sorts, matching games, bingo, and more. You will be given the opportunity at the end of the session to collaborate with colleagues and to try making your own Flippity activities, so please bring your device!
