This session outlines simple steps that will make both Short Constructed Response and Extended Constructed Response less threatening. Participants will explore approaches for Grade 3-12 ESL and ELA teachers to scaffold instruction and to boost students’ performance in writing. The session includes an opportunity to examine the required elements of the short constructed response and the extended constructed response and learn to help students incorporate these elements into their writing. During the session we will use sentence stems, graphic organizers, and short videos. Our participants will walk away with multiple tools to prepare students of all language levels for the ELA STAAR/EOC Writing.

Orchestrating classroom interactions that significantly improve an emergent bilingual’s language and literacy skills is both a science and an art. Simply providing curriculum-aligned questions and opportunities to “turn and talk” with peers never yields impressive results. Multilingual learners at every age and English proficiency level require guidance in targeted language to achieve a range of communicative goals within lesson interactions, from offering points of view to comparing and building upon others’ ideas. They also depend upon teachers in every subject area to provide informed, explicit, and systematic instruction that addresses the nonverbal and verbal dimensions of attentive academic listening.


Drawing on recent research initiatives and extensive classroom experience, Dr. Kinsella details the demands posed by K-12 scholarly interactions, and provides evidence-based principles, classroom-tested guidance, guided video viewing, and practical resources to help all students become more confident communicators, prepared for college and the professional workplace.
