Seidlitz Presents a Keynote Address: Discover Connect Respond: A Practical Approach to Trauma-Informed Multilingual Education
In addition to the stress of a new country and school, many English learners come with unacknowledged adverse childhood experiences - either from their home country, the challenges of growing up in an immigrant community, or a difficult journey into the United States. In these cases, lowering students' affective filter may not be sufficient to surmount the hurdles of behavior issues, and learning and communication difficulties.
Discover, Connect, Respond is a culturally informed, research-based system of intervention found effective with children who have come from hard places. This overview provides a foundation for understanding trauma-informed, multilingual education, and then unpacks strategies to build trust across language and cultural barriers, especially with students new to the country or those who are not progressing as expected. Participants will walk away with practical, easy-to implement routines to increase language output and academic performance among their multilingual students from hard places. |

Drawing on recent research projects and classroom experience, Dr. Kinsella introduces principles and practices to prepare aspiring K-12 bilingual scholars for the vocabulary demands of academic interaction, text reading, and competent written response. She provides lesson-planning guidelines for prioritizing both topic-focused and cross-disciplinary academic words (e.g., compare, comparison) for robust teaching, and demonstrates an explicit and interactive instructional routine. Participants observe lesson footage, review sample lessons, note-taking guides, and competency-aligned word lists to support implementation.

Equitable Beginnings: Tackling Barriers in First-Year Dual Language Programs
Even though equity for ELs has been the original intent of dual language, barriers to achieving equity exist. This session will present the findings from a qualitative case study evaluation that aimed to identify actions that removed and also added to equity in a first year dual language program. Final analyses indicate that although the scholars created dual language policy demonstrated a purpose of equity, the English-dominant context of the community impeded this purpose; however, elements of equity were also evident during implementation. These findings have implications at both the state and the local levels. At the state level, targeted support for programs planning for dual language to address these potential barriers would be beneficial. At the district level, programs can learn from the barriers in this study and reinforce the created language policy and implementation actions to lead to a more equitable outcome.

They will hear a variety of models used in West Michigan. In small groups, they will discuss the pros and cons of the programs presented. In a large group, they will share advice and ideas for the attendees to hear and discuss. Attendees will also leave with a list of ideas to share with their content teachers. In this session, we will affirm how every educator—whether a teacher, paraeducator, or pre-service intern—can be an effective multilingual (ML) teacher. We will examine a summer school program designed to support both newcomers and experienced multilingual learners in a culturally sustaining and collaborative environment. Through co-planning, co-teaching, and co-reflecting, this program offers a model for educators to integrate hands-on learning experiences, social justice themes and authentic performance tasks into their practice. By adopting a project-based approach, the program not only develops students’ academic and linguistic skills but also fosters their voice, identity and agency.
